Looking ahead.

The elections are well over but the lingering feeling of disappointment still persists. It's true that I am slightly disappointed that my preferred presidentiable and vice-presidentiable did not win, but looking past that, there is a whole range of other disappointing circumstances.

Some people just don't learn. It's a terrifying thing to consider the future of the country in the hands of a president that was already proven guilty and sent to "jail" but seeing that prospect so close to reality was nerve-racking. In fact, a lot of people i know were seriously considering leaving the country if that presidentiable overtook Aquino's lead during the counting, if that presidentiable won. So at this point in time, I'm just thankful that Aquino won as President and I'm hoping that he proves his worth-- that the peoples' votes were not wasted in electing the wrong presidentiable, that he is the best bet. So, God speed to him and his term.

BUT.

We all know that a lot of people did not get to vote. There are people who registered but did not vote. There are those people who went to vote but saw the long, long line of people at the voting centers and could not even stand to wait for their turn and went home instead. There are those people who did not even bother to register. And there are even more people who wanted to vote but couldn't-- teenagers, like myself who wanted a say in the future of their country.

It makes me wonder, what if everyone who could vote put their right to use? What if no one abstained? How different would the results be then? Si Aquino parin kaya nanalo? Si Binay parin kaya? I guess my questions here would never be answered and would remain what ifs till the dawn of time. But when the time comes that Filipinos would again start to question and rebel against the administration that they voted for, I hope that those who did abstain and chose not to vote but could have, would be reminded that they had a chance to prevent that... but chose to waste it.
